I drew a steeple.
My life is complete.
Ancient Rome was just as wondrous, chilling and awe-inspiring as I thought it'd be. Moreso, even. My simple mind will never be able to fathom the engineering skills, the talent and precision of the enormous and yet ornate buildings in which thousands upon thousands of people gathered to socialise, bathe, debate, kill... Die. I can't even.
To think that the Colosseum sat for what... 800 years or so? Stripped down after the city of Rome was abandoned. The remains just weathering away. It blows my mind that I was able to gaze upon it let alone walk through it, touch it, breathe it all in.
Augustus' forum might have been my favourite ruins for superficial reasons only. The half of it that wasn't destroyed to make way for a city revamp still vaguely looks like steps and columns and not just hunks of rock. But the many hunks of rock I saw still fascinated me nonetheless. So many photos of just broken rubble.
Ahhhh so cool! I'm internally squealing as I type. I barely scratched the surface with my basic knowledge of the Roman Empire, most of which I admit I've forgotten but the things I saw, read and learned yesterday was like a braingasm (or something not to do with sexual arousal because that's weird).
I don't remember which emperor it was... Tiberius perhaps? But he had this weird epilation fetish. I'll have to look that up. Whether it was Tiberius, I mean. Not epilation fetishes in general because that's also weird.
My brain craves more knowledge about the religious happenings, the social upheavals, the politically driven betrayals, the fashion and all the drama. My passion for Ancient Rome had definitely dwindled over the years as every day life took priority but physically being in Rome reignited it all again. I've got to get reading so I can properly appreciate the world's oldest city when I next return.
The Trevi fountain was undergoing repairs though and there was this tiny little puddle of water that we were allowed to throw our coins in. I missed and threw it at a glass wall designed to keep coins and tourists out. So according to the fountain's fortune predicting abilities, I'm not coming back. Yeah? Well. I'll show you, fountain. I'm gonna be back and I'm gonna chuck so many fricken coins in your functional, flowing streams and basins and it will be fracking amazing.
Summary: Happy. Everything day from here on can suck and I won't even mind. Much.
PS. Vatican was alright. The Sistine Chapel made me feel small and very very untalented. Michelangelo, you were something else. You knew how to stick it to the man!!! Ultimate badass sculptor and fresco dabbler.
